We boarded the Mystic Sea today and departed Anacortes for our search of whales and wildlife. The Captain took us through the center of the San Juan Islands and wiggled through Wasp Pass. Just on the other side of Wasp Pass, we found Transient Orcas. T-65A’s were traveling South bound in San Juan Channel. T-65A and her 4 children swam and porpoised near the shores of Shaw Island. The bustling town of Friday Harbor on one side and the quiet community of Shaw on the other. The whales continued to travel and splash before turning East into Upright Channel.
We left the whales and continued our journey South in San Juan Channel. We cut through Deadman Island where the currents boil water and the Harbor Seals wait for their dinner to pass by (Rumor has it that at extreme low tides you can still see remnants of shackles here from when people were thrown overboard during the smuggling days). Still heading South, we stopped at Whale Rocks to get a good look at the massive Steller Sea Lions. 2,000 pounds of snarling brown fur.
The Captain took the Mystic Sea on a wide swing around the South end of Lopez Island. We cruised out to Smith and Minor Islands. The beaches were covered with a fallen down lighthouse, Harbor Seals and Cormorants. Cruising back North, we ended the day with 2 Bald Eagles, Harbor Porpoise, a variety of sea birds and Burrows Island Lighthouse.
