Sept 24 trip report – on yet another sunny windless day, we traveled by Lopez Island, viewing seals and turkey vultures on the way. Continued towards San Juan Island, via Whale Rocks to check on the Steller sea lions hauled out there, and onward to find members of J-pod, very spread out, traveling southbound between Eagle Point and Salmon Bank. Our first sighting was of the J16s, in the distance, and many other whales way off close to shore. We veered off to the west, and found L87 Onyx actively foraging, and also J-27 Blackberry fairly close by. It’s always good to see these two big males! We took the scenic route back to port, inter-island, catching lots of ‘glimpses’ of harbor porpoise on the way. The season is winding down, come out with us soon! Jill Hein, volunteer naturalist.
